As one of the most popular full-frame mirrorless cameras over the years, Canon R5 has great advantages in resolution, speed, and video capabilities. However, the battery life also needs to be paid attention to due to its high resolution and processing power.

Today, I’m going to show you all about the canon r5 battery life, including what batteries can be used, what factors affect the battery life, how is the battery LP-E5NH and how to prolong the battery life.

What Batteries Can Be Used in Canon R5?

LP-E6NH is now the most used in Canon R5. As an upgraded version of LP-E6N and LP-E6, LP-E6NH has a capacity of 2130mAh, which is about 14 percent more than older LP-E6N.

It also supports in-camera charge, which means you easily charge it with a Type-C USB cable without taking the battery out.

What Factors Affect Battery Life?

Shooting Interval

You can probably take 1000 shots on a single battery easily when you take fast bursts of images. But if you leave the camera on between shots, your battery will be drained out more quickly.

EVF

As a mirrorless camera, the EVF usually needs to be turned on when you are composing or taking a picture.

Sensor

The sensor comes on frequently in a mirrorless camera. On the contrary, a DSLR sensor with an OVF only comes on when taking a picture or recording a video.

Display Performance

The screen display performance also has an impact on your battery life. You can always set it to power saving mode if you are not shooting on fast-moving subjects. It’s a great save on your battery.

How Is Canon R5 Battery Life(LP-E6NH)?

Take Picture

About 490 shots can be captured on a single charge under the testing conditions of 23˚C, using the LCD in Power Saving Mode. But you can only take 320 shots when using the LCD or 220 shots using the EVF. As you know, EVF is a great power drainer.

However, it still mainly depends on how you use the camera. For example, if you spend much time composing, scoping, etc., while the camera is still working, the battery may drain out before 490 shots. On the contrary, if you’re doing many burst shots, you may take 800 or even 1000 shots per charge.

Record Video

About 2 hours and 20 minutes in total can be used for recording videos in one single charge, with the format of Movie Servo AF: Disable, Full HD 29.97P/25P IPB(Standard), at 23˚C.

But if you record the video with 8K DCI, it can only last for 1 hour and 10 minutes in total per charge.

Note that: Canon R5 has a record time limit of thirty minutes in a single record(4K 30fps or less).

How Can I Make My Canon Battery Last Longer?

Avoid Low Temperature

You can generally take about 220 shots at 23℃, but only about 200 shots at 0℃.

Use LCD Instead of EVF

Contrary to common intuition, LCD has a lower power consumption. So, using LCD rather than EVF will allow you to take more shots under the same condition.

Use Low Screen Brightness

Set the screen brightness to 5 when indoors and higher when outdoors.

Disable Continuous AF

It also consumes much power when the Continuous AF is turned on. So turn it off.

Turn on Airplane Mode

Bluetooth and Wifi are also power drainers. Turn on the Airplane Mode unless you need to upload your images.

Set Disp. Performance to Power Saving

Setting Disp. performance to Power saving can help with the battery life as well. You can set it to Smooth temporarily only for fast-moving subjects, but 120Hz EVF will drain the power quicker.

Adjust the Power Saving

Unlike the power saving mode in the display setting, you can decide how long before the screen, camera, and viewfinder turn off automatically after the camera is idle.

I recommend the setting like this:

Display off: 15s,

Auto power off: 30s,

Viewfinder off: 1 min.

Are Third-party Camera Batteries Good?

The answer is Yes…for some time. Third-party camera batteries, also known as “off-brand” batteries, are usually priced lower than Canon’s original batteries.

However, the quality of these third-party batteries from different companies has uneven quality. You need to screen carefully before buying one.

Conclusion

Although Canon R5’s original battery LP-E6NH has a bigger capacity than the older version, it still can’t last long if you are a heavy user or have bad habits.

But I believe you already know how many shots can be taken within one charge. Try the tips provided above, and you will make the battery life longer.
